The goal is to teach children that even if items are completely different, they can still have a common base. Understanding abstract information is a lot more challenging than understanding concrete information. When asked, a child may be able to name some fruits, some animals, some shapes (concrete categories), but it's just as important to be able to identify things that are noisy, things that have bristles, things you find at birthday parties, things that grow on trees etc.

Question ... Series

Question Series – In the Home

40 laminated photo cards. 5"x 3.5".
The goal of this series enables a child to understand "Wh" questions. There are 8 events. Each event has 5 "Wh" questions in sequence. This helps the child to answer questions in context.

Each question sequence contains a "Where, Why, What, Which and When" question. The child understands the value of "Wh" questions when events are broken down into structured questions. "Why do you eat breakfast?" "Because you're hungry", is just a piece of arbitrary information. Putting questions into sequence gives meaning to the questions and helps the child understand an event. You eat when you're hungry, you make breakfast in the kitchen, you can eat cereal for breakfast, you wash the dishes when you're done and you need a spoon for cereal. These question sequences help a child make sense of their world. Other examples in the pack include hide and seek, taking a bath, brushing our teeth, baking cookies, doing laundry, eating breakfast, planting flowers and swimming in the pool.

Conversation Starters

These "Conversation Starters" from Natural Learning Concepts help teach students with autism, PDD, Speech and Language Delays or Asperger's conversation skills.

There are two recommended stages to using these cards:

  1. Stage One
Ask students a question and flip over the card so they see the beginning of the answer. This prompts children to fill in the blanks and encourages them to think of appropriate answers. It teaches children to be spontaneous and use different answers every time you use this pack.
  2. Stage Two
Let children ask YOU the question and YOU fill in the blanks. This teaches children to inquire about other people. It teaches children to ask another question after getting a response. This set has absolutely astounding results!
